Domain with keywords
There was a time in the early 1990s when anyone could register relevant single-word domains with ease. Fast forward 12 years and almost all relevant nouns, verbs and adjectives in the English dictionary have been registered. Unless one is able to purchase such domains from their current owners, the chances of registering them at 10 Dollars is long gone. To make matters worse, up until March 2004, only domains with 24 characters or less could be registered which made the registration of relevant domains an uphill task.
Thankfully since March 2004, the limit on characters was extended to 64 which gave registrants better options in choosing domains. The 64 characters are counted between www. and .com thus a combination of two or three words could be slotted in with ease. But one should apply caution and not get carried away by the 64 character limit as most Search Engine Robots dislike long URLs when indexing pages. At the same time 2 or 3 good keywords on a domain could actually help your website compared to a single word domain.
Lets take an example to show how it works. If you have a small shop that sells digital cameras, there is no way of getting a single word domain for such a popular product. But if you add a word like 'Cornershop' to the phrase Digital-Cameras, you get the key words of 'Digital' and 'Cameras' into your domain making it a keyword-rich domain. While you do not require to add a hyphen in between 'Digital' and 'Cameras' a URL that's hyphenated with cornershop-digital-cameras.com is easier to remember than cornershopdigitalcameras.com. Any URL longer than 3 words becomes a sentence and looses its effect unless its a well known catchy phrase.
COM, .NET .ORG or .US
Since the demand for .COM domains far outstrips the demand for .NET, ORG and .US it may be still possible to get some really juicy domain names with a .NET .ORG or .US extension. The preference is entirely up to the individual depending on the nature of the website but commercial websites in general carry the .COM extension. The .NET extension was intended for computer networking companies but there is no restriction as to what purpose it can be used for as many non-computer related websites carry that extension. The .ORG extension is generally used for non-profit organizations such as charity foundations, religious websites and community based websites. The .BIZ , .TV and.US are relatively new and were added to ease the pressure on the .COM sector while extensions like .AERO are reserved for the airline industry. Some of the other less popular extensions are .WS .NAME .AG .AU .BE .CC .CN .DE .EU .FM .JOBS .JP .NZ .TC and .VG. It is learnt that .ASIA too is on the way. Besides these, all countries too have domain extensions (or country codes) such as .UK .IN. .MY but often these domains have to be registered with respective registrars in those countries.
A rule of thumb is to incorporate keywords in your domain to gain maximum mileage in terms of generating Search Engine traffic. Unless you have a website with strong brand recognition like AMAZON, SONY, COKE or APPLE where keywords are irrelevant, unknown websites with vague domain names will find it hard to attract targeted web traffic.
